For the picnic, Victoria, and Abdul, Stephen Frears jokes that it is typically English and glum.

Unwilling to be put off by an oncoming thunderstorm, cold, and wind, Victoria insists on picnicking amid heath. It’s uncomfortably cold, and Victoria and fellow picnickers are so bundled in clothing that only their faces and hands show.

Undeterred by the cold, The Queen seems delighted. The others suffer, and teacups rattle.   Henry Ponsonby, her physician, leans over to Dr. Reid and whispers, “It’s alright for her. She’s upholstered.”

Fortunately, tea, desserts, and pastries have been served before the storm reaches them. When a raindrop plops into a teacup, it’s time to return to Balmoral. Victoria walks under an umbrella.

* Frears’ The Queen includes a picnic with Queen Elizabeth II,  Also  Logan Pearsall Smith’s picnic satire “The Ideal Picnic.”
