John Nixon’s Picnics

John Nixon was an amateur painter who flourished between 1784 and his death in 1818. Nixon’s burlesque Undertakers Regaling Themselves at Death’s Door, Door, 1801, was copied by Thomas Rowlandson and renamed Undertakers Regaling. Death’s door is a pun on the tavern owner Robert Death. English Country Life, undated, shows the popularity of picking as we know it.
